Furniture design is an engineering process, not a decorative one. If a wardrobe is to serve for 15 years, it must be designed based on the physics of materials and the ergonomics of the human body. At RJM Design, we do not use generalisations. We work with millimetres, load capacity and board density coefficients. The following article is a technical compendium for anyone planning custom-made furniture, wardrobes or kitchens.

Ergonomics and critical dimensions in home cupboards

A wardrobe is not just a box with doors. It is a system of compartments that must match the dimensions of your clothes. A 5 cm error at the planning stage will result in creased jacket sleeves or the inability to close the sliding doors.

Cupboard depth: The battle for millimetres

Most customers think that a wardrobe is 60 cm deep and that’s the end of the matter. This is a mistake.

Wardrobe with hinged doors: With an external depth of 600 mm, after deducting the front (18 mm) and back (3 mm HDF + 5 mm spacer), there is 574 mm of usable space. This is the optimal dimension.

Custom-made sliding wardrobe: Sliding systems (rails) require space. A standard double-track rail takes up 90 mm. If you make a wardrobe with a depth of 600 mm, only 510 mm will be left for clothes. That’s not enough. Jackets in sizes L and XL are 520-540 mm wide. They will catch on the door. Solution: a sliding wardrobe must have a minimum total depth of 650 mm.

Fitting a shallow recess: If you have a recess that is 400–450 mm deep, the only option is a crossbar hanger. However, remember that you can only fit a maximum of 3–4 heavy coats on one such hanger.

Height of modules and bars

Clothes have their own length standards. Designing “by eye” is a waste of space.

Shirts and blouses: They require 100–105 cm of clearance.

Trousers hung in full length: They need 120-130 cm.

Coats and long dresses: The standard length is 160–170 cm. If you are tall, add 10 cm.

Pantographs: In wardrobes taller than 250 cm, we use oil lifts. They allow you to use the upper part of the wardrobe for rails, which you can lower to chest level with a single movement of your hand. The lifting capacity of a standard pantograph is 12 kg. Overloading it will result in the mechanism breaking after a few months.

Materials science: Boards, edges and density

Not every white board is the same. As a carpenter who makes custom furniture, I focus on what’s inside, not just the decor.

Laminated chipboard (LPW)

This is the basic material for cabinet bodies. The standard at RJM Design is 18 mm thick board. Avoid 16 mm boards, which are used in flat-pack furniture from supermarkets.

Density: A good board has a density of 650–700 kg/m³. This ensures that screws and hinges are held securely in place.

Hygiene class: We only use boards with emission class E1 (or E05), which means a safe level of formaldehyde release.

ABS edging and PUR technology

The edge of the board is its weakest point. Moisture gets in through it, causing the furniture to swell.

ABS edging: It is 0.8 mm or 2 mm thick. It is resistant to mechanical impact (it does not chip like old melamine edging).

PUR (polyurethane) adhesive: Unlike standard EVA adhesive, PUR adhesive is thermosetting and completely waterproof. If you are ordering custom-made kitchens or bathroom furniture, PUR adhesive is a must. Once dry, the joint cannot be dissolved, even with hot steam.

Recess installation – technical installation challenges

Every wall in a block of flats or house is curved to some extent. The recess must be fitted out in such a way as to compensate for these curves, so that the furniture looks like an integral part of the architecture.

Plumbing and levelling

The wardrobe cannot “rest” on the wall. It must be vertical and horizontal in relation to gravity, not in relation to the curved ceiling.

Side and ceiling trims: These are strips of board 50–100 mm wide, which we cut to size at the installation site. We adjust them to the unevenness of the wall using an electric planer. This ensures that there is not even a millimetre of gap between the wardrobe and the wall.

Self-supporting structure: We always build a full body (floor, ceiling, sides of the wardrobe). We do not mount shelves directly to plasterboard walls. Plasterboard walls work, crumble and do not provide stability under the weight of clothes. A full body guarantees that the wardrobe will retain its geometry for decades.

Flooring and drive systems

If we are installing a custom-made sliding wardrobe on floor panels, we must bear in mind how they work (swell and shrink).

Bottom track: We attach it to the floor using strong double-sided tape or screws (if there is underfloor heating – tape only).

Positioners: These are small plates in the upper track. Without them, even with a minimal slope in the floor, the doors will slide away from the side of the wardrobe. At RJM Design, we use magnetic positioners that “catch” the doors at the zero point.

Custom-made office furniture: Efficiency and cable management

In an office, a wardrobe and a desk are work tools. What matters here is load capacity and opening cycles. Custom-made office furniture must withstand the standard 20,000 front opening cycles, which, with intensive use, is achieved within 3-4 years.

Technical parameters of document cabinets

An office binder filled with paper weighs approx. 4–5 kg. A standard shelf with a width of 80 cm can hold 10–12 such binders.

Shelf deflection: Under a load of 50 kg, a 100 cm wide shelf made of 18 mm board will deflect by 3-5 mm. This is unacceptable. Solution: in custom-made office furniture for companies, we use vertical partitions every 75 cm or thicken the board structure to 25 mm (so-called thickened tops).

Usable depth: The binder is 285 mm deep. The office cabinet must have a minimum external depth of 380 mm so that the documents do not protrude beyond the outline of the body after the front has been installed.

Usable depth: The binder is 285 mm deep. The office cabinet must have a minimum external depth of 380 mm so that the documents do not protrude beyond the outline of the body after the front has been installed.

A desk is not just a tabletop on legs. It is a communication hub.

Tabletop height: The standard height is 750 mm. If you are taller than 185 cm, your desk should be 780–800 mm high.

Cable management: We use under-counter cable trays. They prevent cables from hanging down, which is the main cause of equipment failure (accidental pulling out of the cable with your foot). We install media ports (230V + USB + RJ45 sockets) recessed into the structure of the worktop.

Custom-made shop furniture: Durability in high-traffic areas

Wyposażenie sklepu meble na wymiar projektujemy z myślą o uderzeniach wózkami zakupowymi i środkach chemicznych do dezynfekcji.

Furniture element

Standard material

Heavy Duty material (Recommended)

Why?

Counter plinth

Laminated board

Aluminium / Stainless steel

Resistance to mops and shoe impacts.

Worktop

HPL laminate

Quartz conglomerate

Resistance to scratches from coins and keys.

Goods shelves

5 mm ordinary glass

8 mm ESG tempered glass

Customer safety in the event of a collision.

Fronty gablot

Standard hinges

Reinforced hinges (40 mm box)

The weight of large glass panes.

Export to Spreadsheets

Custom-made shop furniture must have product lighting. We use LED strips with a colour rendering index (CRI) of>. Only then will a red dress in the display window remain red, rather than brown.

Fittings and drawer systems: Motion engineering

Drawers are the most complex element of custom-made furniture. The choice of runners determines the comfort of use for years to come.

Roller guides vs ball guides vs system guides

Roller guides: The cheapest, noisy, no full extension. We do not use them in professional projects.

Ball bearing slides (GTV type): Cheap, with full extension, but their performance decreases with load.

Box systems (e.g. Blum Tandembox, Hettich ArciTech): These are standard in modern custom-made kitchens. Metal sides integrated with the guide. They can withstand loads of up to 70 kg without compromising smooth movement.

For those interested in learning more about the durability of furniture systems, I recommend an expert article on furniture fittings strength standards, which describes fatigue testing in detail.

Custom-made kitchens: Zones and distances

The kitchen follows the working triangle principle: refrigerator – sink – hob.

Worktop: At least 80 cm of free space between the sink and the hob. This is where you do 90% of your prep work.

Height of wall cabinets: They should start 55–60 cm above the worktop. If you have a gas hob, this distance must be at least 65 cm for fire safety reasons.

Drawers instead of base cabinets: Cabinets with shelves in the lower part of the kitchen are a mistake. To get a pot from the back, you have to take everything out onto the floor. Full extension drawers eliminate this problem.

Custom-made wardrobe with sliding doors – what determines its price?

Customers often ask about price differences for custom-made sliding wardrobes. The table below explains the differences between an “economy” wardrobe and a “standard” wardrobe.

Feature

Economy Version

Standard version RJM DESIGN

Driving system

Steel (loud, soft)

Aluminium (rigid, quiet)

Thickness of the back

2 mm HDF (often nailed down)

HDF 3 mm (wpuszczany w nutę)

Rollers

Plastic, without bearings

Łożyskowane, z elastomerem

Bearing-mounted, with elastomer

Bearing-mounted, with elastomer

Hydraulic (soft close)

Brushes

Stick-on (peel off)

Slide into profile (permanent)

Export to Spreadsheets

Investment in an aluminium system pays for itself after 3 years. Steel systems in custom-made wardrobes often require servicing (roller replacement) after just 24 months of intensive use.

Wardrobe fittings: Maximising capacity per square metre

Unlike a wardrobe, a walk-in wardrobe is an open or semi-open system where access to clothes from multiple sides is a priority. When designing walk-in wardrobe furniture, we forego wardrobe backs (HDF boards) in favour of anchoring the structure directly to the walls, which saves approximately 2–3 cm on the depth of each module.

Corner modules are a key element here. Avoid “blind corners” that are difficult to access. We use curved rails or pull-out systems in these areas. If your wardrobe has sloping ceilings, built-in wardrobes in the bedroom require the use of stepped cabinets. The upper surfaces of such cabinets serve as shelves for less frequently used items, and the rails are mounted at the lowest point that allows clothes to hang freely (minimum 100 cm from the floor).

Custom-made furniture for a small flat: The “vertical wall” strategy

In studio flats, every square metre of floor space is at a premium, which is why we design furniture upwards rather than outwards. Custom-made furniture for a small flat should serve several functions at once. A wardrobe in the hall can smoothly transition into a living room bookcase or desk.

Storage space above doors: By connecting two wardrobes with a crown above the doorway, you gain 1 to 2 cubic metres of space for suitcases or ski equipment.

Cargo cabinets: In narrow recesses (15-30 cm) where a traditional shelf will not fit, we install pull-out vertical shelves for household chemicals or food supplies.

Frameless mirrors: Installing large mirror panels on wardrobe fronts visually reduces the presence of heavy furniture in a small room.

Custom-made wardrobe with sliding doors: price vs mechanics

Let us return to the costs, as this is the most common point of contention. When analysing offers for custom-made wardrobes with sliding doors, the price often seems high due to details that are not immediately apparent. We are referring to the handle profiles.

In budget systems, the handle is thin and bends under the pressure of the hand. At RJM Design, we use aluminium profiles with a minimum wall thickness of 1.2 mm. This prevents the door from “shaking” when sliding. In addition, each wardrobe should have brush strips that slide into a special channel in the profile. Adhesive brush strips, used in cheap replacements, peel off after one hot spell in summer, leaving glue on the fronts and clothes.

Recess installation – dry installation technology

The assembly of furniture in a finished flat must be clean and precise. As an experienced carpenter specialising in custom-made furniture, I prepare most of the elements in my workshop to minimise cutting at the customer’s premises.

Laser levelling: We use cross lasers to determine the ideal level of the tracks. The floor may have a 2 cm slope, but the track must be straight, otherwise the doors will hit the side of the wardrobe with great force.

Mounting to suspended ceilings: If your recess ends with a plasterboard ceiling, we need to use umbrella anchors or screw into the aluminium profiles of the ceiling structure. If the ceiling has not been reinforced, we install a so-called upper ring, which stiffens the wardrobe independently of the ceiling.

Blend cuts: We use saws with a guide rail, which guarantees a clean cut without laminate splinters. It is these details that distinguish professional custom-made wardrobes from mass-produced products.

Specialised equipment: Office cabinets for businesses

In a business context, custom-made office furniture for companies must meet certain requirements. We use locks with an increased security standard and cabinet backs made of 18 mm solid board (instead of thin HDF), which makes it difficult to gain unauthorised access to documents by pushing out the back of the furniture.

In addition, we design custom-made office furniture with air circulation in mind. If there is a shredder or server in the cabinet, we install aluminium ventilation grilles in the plinth and top cornice to prevent the equipment from overheating. This is particularly important when the cabinet is part of a larger built-in unit and there is no natural ventilation at the rear.

How to plan your wardrobe well?

Shop fittings: Product display

When ordering custom-made shop furniture, the static load capacity of glass shelves is a key parameter.

Thickness of tempered glass

Maximum load (at a width of 80 cm)

Application

6 mm

5-7 kg

Cosmetics, light accessories

8 mm

12-15 kg

Footwear, electronics

10 mm

20+ kg

Heavy objects, exhibits

Professional shop fittings and custom-made furniture use track lighting systems recessed into the sides of the shelving. This allows the height of the shelves to be changed without having to disconnect the electrical installation – the electricity is transmitted via special contact strips.

Furniture fronts: Varnish, acrylic or laminate?

Choosing a front is not just a matter of colour. It is a decision about how the furniture will react to UV radiation, mechanical scratches and cleaning products. Every custom furniture maker knows that fronts behave differently depending on their internal structure.

Lacquered fronts (MDF)

Varnishing involves spraying layers of polyurethane paint onto MDF board.

Advantages: Possibility of perfectly matching the colour to the walls (RAL and NCS palettes). No visible edges – the front is coated with varnish on all sides.

Disadvantages: The varnish is relatively soft. Impact with a hard object (e.g. a vacuum cleaner) may cause chipping that cannot be easily concealed.

Application: Most often chosen for custom-made bedroom recesses, where there is less traffic than in the kitchen or hallway.

Acrylic fronts

It is a hard acrylic mat stuck onto a board.

Durability: Acrylic is much more scratch-resistant than lacquer. It has a deep gloss (glass effect) or deep matt finish that is resistant to fingerprints.

Technology: At RJM Design, we finish the edges of acrylic fronts with a laser or PUR adhesive. This makes the joint almost invisible and the front 100% waterproof.

Application: Ideal for heavily used custom-made kitchens and bathroom furniture.

Application: Ideal for heavily used custom-made kitchens and bathroom furniture.

The most economical and durable solution. Modern laminates (e.g. synchronous structures) closely resemble natural wood, with grain and pores that can be felt under the finger. This is the best choice when planning custom-made office furniture for businesses, as it can withstand decades of contact with files and detergents.

Custom-made kitchens: Opening systems and mechanisms

In modern kitchens, we are moving away from traditional handles in favour of touchless systems and edge strips.

Lift systems (e.g. Aventos): We do not use side hinges in wall cabinets. The front lifts upwards, allowing you to work freely with the cabinet open without the risk of hitting your head. The mechanism allows you to stop the front in any position.

Drawers under the sink: A special U-shaped cut-out allows the drawer to be installed around the siphon. This is a key location for waste sorting bins, which in custom-made kitchens should slide out automatically when you press the front with your knee (Servo-Drive or Tip-On systems).

Cargo and Magic Corner: Corner cupboards are the most difficult space to use. Pull-out basket systems allow you to pull the entire contents of the cupboard out, eliminating the need to kneel down next to the furniture.

Custom-made sliding wardrobe: Door panels and their weight

When designing custom-made wardrobe doors, we must take their weight into account. An average door leaf measuring 100 cm x 250 cm made of 18 mm board weighs approximately 30–35 kg. If we add a mirror, the weight increases to 50 kg.

Door stabilisers: With tall and narrow fronts (e.g. 50 cm wide and 260 cm high), the board may bend. In such cases, we use tensioners (stabilising rods) mounted at the back of the front, which allow for mechanical correction of the board’s curvature.

Safety glass: Every mirror and piece of Lacobel glass in our designs is reinforced with polypropylene film. In the event of breakage, the shards remain on the film, which is a safety standard in homes with children.

Silencing: Sliding doors must not “rattle”. We use pneumatic stoppers, which not only close the front, but also stabilise it in the upper track, eliminating vibrations.

Custom-made shop furniture: Backroom functionality

An often overlooked element in business design is the backroom. Custom-made shop furniture includes not only display cases, but also storage systems.

Shelving with reinforced construction: We use metal profiles concealed in laminated board to increase the load capacity of the shelves to 50–80 kg per running metre.

Pulse counters: They must have built-in cable grommets for cash cables and dedicated recesses for UPS power supplies, which cannot stand on the floor due to the risk of flooding when washing floors.

Properly designed shop fittings and custom-made furniture reduce customer service time by several percent, because everything – from the terminal to the wrapping paper – has its place calculated down to the millimetre.

Properly designed shop fittings and custom-made furniture reduce customer service time by several percent, because everything – from the terminal to the wrapping paper – has its place calculated down to the millimetre.

The hallway is an area exposed to water and sand.

Open shoe compartments: The bottom of the wardrobe should be ventilated. Instead of solid board shelves, we use openwork metal shelves that allow shoes to dry.

Built-in wardrobes: If the wardrobe is adjacent to an external wall of the building, it must have a ventilation gap (min. 2 cm) between the back and the wall. This prevents mould from forming as a result of water vapour condensation.

Built-in wardrobes: If the wardrobe is adjacent to an external wall of the building, it must have a ventilation gap (min. 2 cm) between the back and the wall. This prevents mould from forming as a result of water vapour condensation.

Case Study: Wardrobe in a prefabricated concrete block of flats

Assembling furniture in buildings from the 1970s and 1980s is a test for every contractor. The biggest challenge is not crooked walls, but the lack of right angles in each of the three dimensions. When we build a recess, it often turns out that the difference in width between the bottom and top of the opening is as much as 4 cm. In such a case, a carpenter making custom-made furniture cannot rely on ready-made templates.

The use of a custom-made wardrobe in such a room requires the use of so-called “false sides”. These are additional panels mounted to the side walls, which we align using wedges and low-pressure foam, and then mask with cover strips. This ensures that the track on which each custom-made sliding wardrobe rests is perfectly horizontal, which prevents the door wings from opening on their own.

Office cabinets and their role in open-plan offices

In large offices, furniture serves to divide the space into zones. By using custom-made office furniture, we can create acoustic barriers without erecting partition walls. The rear walls of such cabinets are made of perforated or felt-upholstered panels, which drastically reduces reverberation in the room.

For large enterprises, custom-made office furniture must be designed in a modular fashion. This allows for quick rearrangement of the office when the number of employees changes. It is also worth ensuring that custom-made office furniture is used in social areas, where kitchen worktops are exposed to constant contact with water and high temperatures from espresso machines. In such places, we only use compact or conglomerate worktops, which are completely non-absorbent.

Cost optimisation: Custom-made wardrobe with sliding doors price

When analysing the topic of custom-made wardrobes with sliding doors and their price, we must look at the cost estimate from the perspective of durability. A cheap steel system costs a fraction of the price of a professional aluminium system, but its service life under the weight of a mirrored front is limited to 2-3 years. After this time, the rollers become flattened and the doors begin to vibrate and make noise.

When choosing custom-made wardrobes at RJM Design, you are investing in fittings with a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty. Saving PLN 500 at the purchase stage often generates a cost of PLN 1,000 for servicing and replacing the sliding system in the future. The same applies to shop fittings – professional shop fittings and custom-made furniture must pay for themselves through reliability, which is why we only use reinforced runners with a load capacity of up to 70 kg per drawer.

Custom-made shop furniture – details that drive sales

In retail, the counter is the most important piece of furniture. When designing custom-made shop furniture, we take into account the ergonomics of the salesperson’s work (counter height 900 mm) and the security of cash and IT equipment. Properly selected custom-made furniture allows you to hide the tangle of cables from terminals, fiscal printers and monitors inside special technical channels. Custom-made furniture for a small flat: Smart storage

In micro-apartments, the most popular solution is to build wall-to-wall recesses. This allows you to hide not only clothes, but also a washing machine, boiler or electricity meter. If you are planning custom-made furniture for a small flat, remember to use light-coloured, high-gloss fronts that reflect light and enlarge the space. On the other hand, custom-made built-in wardrobes in the bedroom should be as subdued as possible so as not to overwhelm the relaxation area.

For those seeking professional wardrobe organisation, a built-in wardrobe is the ideal solution, eliminating the need for chests of drawers and bedside tables in the bedroom and freeing up valuable floor space. Every custom-made kitchen design we implement is based on the same principles: durability, ergonomics and no “filler” in the construction.

.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading1346_bb7e25-e1,
